HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!

November 2002

OCTOBER was a wonderful month of class work, special art projects and a great trip to Heritage Plantation. Here are some personal notes from our teachers as to what's happened and what's coming up in NOVEMBER.

Kindergarten - Mrs. Mary Lyons

We SALUTE YOU AMERICA!

Pre-reading readiness and reading skills are developing very nicely. Math will entail classification, position, pattern concepts and the numbers in sequence to 80.

Language will feature the introduction of nouns.

Penmanship will focus on the correct formation of the entire lower case manuscript alphabet.

Social Science will continue on the concepts of self-families, Pilgrims, Native Americans and Thanksgiving.

Science will be continued in Modular One featuring the senses, growing and changing and being healthy.

Our trip to Heritage Plantation was time, effort and cost well spent. Our guide gave us an excellent educational tour into history. The students were fascinated and learned much. Their behavior and uniforms received some positive comments from other visitors. We are already looking forward to January when some members of the Heritage Plantation staff pay a visit to our school to discuss "antiques" and more.

We all welcome Miss Cruger who will be assisting the students on Tuesdays and Fridays. Miss Kruger will be teaching Science on Tuesday afternoon. The students have adjusted easily to Miss Kruger's presence. We all look forward to a great year together. Good luck, Miss Cruger -good to have your help. You're doing a wonderful job!

Kudos to:

Betsy Brodd, (Donnie's Mom) for the many many hours spent during the month of September collating materials for the class-an excellent job!

Mrs. Hevnor, (David's Mom) for helping Mrs. Benton on Thursdays for art. ALL of the students are able to participate in this enjoyable subject together. We appreciate your driving from Sandwich to help!

Mrs. White who has volunteered to coordinate the chaperones for the Kindergarten class field trips for the year. We appreciate your time and effort. Thank you!!!

We still need one volunteer to coordinate the few parties the students have during the last half hour of the day before an upcoming holiday such as Thanksgiving, Xmas, Valentines Day, etc. (means calling 3-4 parents for donations or refreshments only-not coordinating activities.)

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!
Mrs. Lyons

First Grade - Mrs. Sue Kenney

Everyone is working hard on his or her address. Spelling and phonics find us on short 'u', and then we will review all short vowels.

We are adding and subtracting. Keep on practicing. We are using pennies, 1c, and nickels, 5c - so get your change out.

Trees are our topic in Science as we watch the leaves change and fall.

Rules and Laws are being discussed in Social Studies. Wearing your seatbelt is a LAW.

We are looking forward to Thanksgiving Projects...and our special visitor this month.

At Heritage Plantation our 1st graders were sad to say good-bye to our Tour Guide. She told us so many exciting and interesting myths about each artifact. We truly enjoyed the day!

October is Fire Prevention Month and the 1st graders have gained a lot of knowledge about what to do if they are in a fire or any emergency. SAFETY IS THE KEY!

Thank you to our Classroom Moms: Mrs. Benoit, Mrs. Ehrreich, and Mrs. Baker. We appreciate your help during Reading Time. Thank you Mrs. Goldin for assisting me on Playground Duty.

Second Grade - Mrs. Maureen Coffin

During the month of November, the second grade will be discussing Thanksgiving. We will be concentrating on the theme of 'giving' and the history that led up to the First Thanksgiving. Academically, we will continue to study vowel sounds, syllables and parts of speech. We will begin to discuss action verbs and linking verbs.

In science, we are talking about 'forces' and we will soon begin experiments involving magnets. We have begun to learn about communities and neighbors in Social Science, but will continue our discussion of Maps. The children have been working on labeling a blank map of the United States, writing the states and their capitals. The second graders are very busy!

A special thanks to Mrs. Agostinelli, Mrs.Becal, and Mr. & Mrs. Bueller for sharing their time and talents with us. Mrs. Agostinelli has been coming into the classroom to help the children with their math and reading. Mrs. Becal kindly brought in all the materials for the children to creatively make a Halloween scene to hang up at home for a decoration. Mr. & Mrs. Bueller made "pumpkin pancakes" for K-4 and brought in the "fixins" to decorate them with the children! What a wonderful treat!

The second graders hope that everyone has a "Happy Thanksgiving" with their families.

3rd Grade - Mrs. Rosario

November is a wonderful month for learning about our heritage as Americans. The third grade will focus on the history of the Pilgrims and Native Americans. We are also learning about Johnny Appleseed.

The third graders have been working very hard on their cursive. They are all doing wonderful and each is developing their own beautiful style of writing. Multiplication facts are being memorized and everyone should remember to practice their tables for 10 minutes a night.

I am very pleased with the progress that the third graders are making thus far. I would like to thank the parents for all their help for the first few months of school. Please remember that going to school is like your child's "job." Therefore, they need plenty of sleep, healthy food to eat and an ample amount of time to do their homework.

4th Grade - Mrs. Paquin

This wonderfully enthusiastic group continues to work hard on every aspect of their curriculum. From latitude and longitude to hydrosphere and surface tension to the associative property of multiplication there is nothing they don't tackle with joy and determination.

The Fourth Graders would like to thank Mrs. Felegian for the many delicious treats that she sends our way. We also appreciate all of the time she devotes to our computer class. Mrs. Bernstein contributed two wonderful craft projects for October, which we enjoyed so much. "Merci"

Reminders: Read 15-30 minutes nightly, Creative Writing has been added to Wednesday night's homework. Uniforms should be worn appropriately. Thank you.

Art - Mrs. Benton

Students have been learning a variety of art styles this year. By practicing and creating similar works the children have gained an appreciation of several famous artists.

November will focus on art projects that cross-classroom curriculum, art history, and a thematic (Thanksgiving) project.

I have been very impressed by the enthusiasm students have shown during art class. We are having a blast learning!
